I, Grandma Lee, am remembering that today, November 1, 2020, is the 72nd anniversary of the day I and my family moved from a farm near Viroqua, WI to a farm 75 miles away near Fountain City, WI. It was a cold, rainy, blustery day which made the move very treacherous and difficult.
Let me share some of my memories.
This farm was where my father, James Burton Groves, was farming with his father, William, and his brother, Hubert Groves, at the time my parents married on June 7, 1941. The farm belonged to my Great-Grandmother, Minnie B. Groves. My father's parents, William and Amanda Groves, lived in the big house with Hubert until he moved to Chicago in the early 1940's to attend school and become a Methodist minister. My parents continued to farm but lived in "the little house" after they married which was across the road from the "big house". Following my brother's birth on March 29, 1942, and I was on my way, my Grandparents decided to move to Chicago. I arrived December 7, 1944 and lived with my parents, brother and my Great-Grandmother for nearly three more years before my parents decided to buy a farm of their own. The farm my parents bought was 75 miles away from Viroqua. These later photos of our farm home and buildings did not look like this on November 1, 1948 when it was cold, blustery and the roads were icy and slick.
I was about one month away from turning age 4. I have vivid memories of a few things about that day and those are sad things that happened.
I have written previously about that day so I will share the link here so that you can read that story.
Since this is day one of my new blog, Grandma Lee Remembers, I will close with a promise to keep telling my stories so that I can let you know about my life in the past and also about hopes for the future should God allow my life to continue for more years.
Lee,I'm so excited for you & for all of us who will follow you, as you keep adding to what will be a treasury of family history! And what a perfect day to launch it, on this 1st day of November! God has blessed you with so many memories and a beautiful gift of written expression! I'm so grateful you're responding to His promptings to write. What a gift you're giving to your whole family! With loving congratulations! Marge
ReplyDeleteHow encouraging your kind and generous words of affirmation are to me. I am excited about this new idea I feel is something God has been preparing me for and will be guiding me to do as I work on it. Thanks so much, dear sister.
DeleteWhat great timing to start on Nov 1st, the day that Dad & Mom & 4 of us siblings moved to the Fountain City location. I was 1 year old so remember nothing and I'd never heard the story about the cows unfortunate trip. The stakes were high for our parents as they were taking on a big financial burden and moving away from their families. Their faith in God and love for each other saw them through the hard work they faced and tough times. Thank you for taking on this very important work, Lee!
